WUF13: A Platform for Urban Challenges and Solutions

Baku: An opportunity will arise at WUF13 to exchange views on the impacts of climate change, traffic congestion in major cities, transport infrastructure, and other related issues, as well as global examples, transport expert Rauf Agamirzayev told APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, WUF13 is a world-class platform for learning and gaining experience.

WUF13 holds particular significance for the South Caucasus region, especially in light of the reconstruction efforts following the liberation of Karabakh. Projects such as the construction of new cities are underway, and there is a pressing need to address the challenges faced by large cities, including Baku. The event will provide a crucial opportunity to focus on these urban challenges.

Rauf Agamirzayev emphasized that WUF13 is an international platform for discussing models and challenges in urban management. Azerbaijan is encouraged to fully utilize this platform to prepare for issues related to congestion, environmental concerns, and climate change. The discussions will address the consequences of recent rainfall in Baku, congestion problems, and mobility transformation, contributing to finding solutions for these issues.

One of the key topics at WUF13 will be the ’15-minute city’ concept, which is gaining traction worldwide. This concept is part of Baku’s Master Plan, aimed at transforming the city from a monocentric to a polycentric model. The focus is on implementing solutions for fast distances connecting various centers, although the pace of implementation in some areas needs acceleration.

Rauf Agamirzayev underscored the importance of improving pedestrian infrastructure. Enhancements in short-distance travel, removing barriers, ensuring continuous sidewalks, and creating short walking routes are crucial for accelerating mobility transformation. Initial measures like dedicated bus lanes and micromobility lanes have been introduced, but their completeness is necessary for full functionality.

The future development of public transport is also a significant focus, with plans for metros, trams, and suburban electric trains set for rapid implementation by 2030. Improving pedestrian infrastructure is deemed vital to reducing overload and allowing for quicker and shorter trips through walking and micromobility. Global experience and discussions at WUF13 will be instrumental in advancing these efforts for the country’s development.
