Chairman of the State Statistics Committee Dovletgeldi Amanmukhammedov announced the results of the population census conducted in December 2022 at an expanded meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, the state information agency TDH reports.
According to published data, 7,057,841 people live in Turkmenistan.
22.9% (1,616,246 people) live in Mary region, 22% (1,552,725) in Dashoguz region, 20.5% (1,446,857) in Lebap region, 14.6% (1,030,445) in Ashgabat, 12.5% (882,230) in Akhal region and 7.5% (529,338) in Balkan region.
“About” half of the population are men and “more than” half are women. 47.1% are residents of cities and 52.9% live in villages.
Official information on the number of population in Turkmenistan was not announced before. Different sources gave different estimates of this figure.
Chronicles of Turkmenistan received data in 2015 from the 2012 census, according to which 4,751,120 people lived in the country. The editors of the Meteojournal publication had similar figures. They assessed the available statistical data of the last century and migration dynamics and concluded that approximately 4.95 million people lived in Turkmenistan in 2020.
The US government estimates the total population of Turkmenistan at 5.6 million.
The World Trade Organization, reporting that Turkmenistan had applied for WTO membership, noted that the country’s population is 6.2 million people in 2022.
