Bangkok: The ministerial meeting of the United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) was held in Bangkok, Thailand, alongside the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Addressing the event, Rovnag Abdullayev, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Economy, emphasized the importance of closer regional cooperation in response to global challenges such as the transformation of global supply chains, accelerated digitalization, and increased climate risks.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Rovnag Abdullayev highlighted Azerbaijan’s efforts in expanding e-commerce, developing the Middle Corridor, implementing digital customs and logistics solutions, and strengthening human capital. He also mentioned that the upcoming SPECA Forum of Climate-Smart Cities, set to be held in Baku during the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), will provide an additional platform for practical cooperation.
Participants at the meeting also discussed collaboration in science and innovation, which includes plans to establish the SPECA Regional Research Center focused on sustainable development and green economy in Baku. Other issues were addressed as well.
Shombi Sharp, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), delivered a presentation on the SPECA Multi-Partner Trust Fund. The meeting concluded with SPECA participating states adopting a joint statement.
