Prosecutor General’s Office Continues Investigation into AZAL Plane Crash

BAKU: Investigations into the crash of an Embraer 190 aircraft from Azerbaijan Airlines, which occurred on a Baku-Grozny flight near Aktau, remain ongoing, as confirmed by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan. The crash, which took place on December 25, has prompted a collaborative international effort to determine the cause and assign responsibility.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the investigation is being conducted under the directives of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev has been actively liaising with his counterparts from Kazakhstan, Russia, and Brazil, including Berik Asylov, Igor Krasnov, and Paulo Gonet, respectively. These communications have been central to ensuring a thorough investigation involving multiple jurisdictions.

The investigation has involved extensive on-site work by expert teams from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Brazil. This joint effort aims to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the crash’s circumstances. Discussions with Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General Berik Asylov emphasized the importance of accurate legal assessments and coordination in gathering and analyzing evidence.

Kamran Aliyev also highlighted the cooperation with Russian officials. Russian counterparts have facilitated the Azerbaijani investigators’ work in Grozny, reinforcing the bilateral exchange of evidence necessary for the investigation’s progress. The Russian Investigative Committee, led by Alexander Bastrykin, has formed a dedicated team of investigators and criminologists to explore the possibility of external interference in the crash.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan has committed to keeping the public informed about the investigation’s developments, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in this international investigative effort.
