Presidents of Azerbaijan and Italy Discuss Strategic Partnership and Future Cooperation


Baku: Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic, delivered press statements highlighting the ongoing and future cooperation between the two nations, APA reports. This marks President Mattarella’s second visit to Azerbaijan, reinforcing the strong and strategic partnership between the countries.



According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Aliyev emphasized the successful development of Italian-Azerbaijani relations, citing frequent meetings and strategic partnership documents dating back to 2015. These documents have facilitated cooperation in various sectors, notably energy, with Italy being Azerbaijan’s top trade partner. Azerbaijani oil and gas significantly contribute to Italy’s energy needs. President Aliyev acknowledged President Mattarella’s role in resolving issues related to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) project, which has been operational since 2020, exporting Azerbaijani gas to Italy and enhancing the Southern Gas Corridor’s reach.



President Aliyev also discussed future projects, including exporting electricity to the European Union and constructing power lines, which are expected to expand Azerbaijani-European energy cooperation. He highlighted the collaboration in education, noting the upcoming inauguration of the Italian-Azerbaijani University, which aims to strengthen cultural and educational ties.



President Mattarella expressed gratitude for the hospitality and reiterated the deep friendship between the two nations. He emphasized the broad cooperation in cultural, humanitarian, and educational sectors, which complement the existing energy and industrial partnerships. Italy’s commitment to supporting Azerbaijan’s relations with the European Union was also underscored, recognizing Azerbaijan as an influential partner.



Both presidents acknowledged that the cooperation extends beyond economic interests, emphasizing mutual understanding and friendship. The visit and upcoming events, including the university inauguration, symbolize the strengthening ties and shared commitment to developing relations for the benefit of both countries.
