Baku: The Embassy of India in Baku organized a literary event to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the legendary poet, philosopher, and Nobel laureate, the Embassy told APA.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the event was attended by representatives of the Azerbaijan Presidential Administration, students and faculty members of the Azerbaijan University of Languages, media representatives, members of the Indian diaspora, literature enthusiasts, and friends of India in Azerbaijan.
The program featured recitations of selected poems by Rabindranath Tagore in Azerbaijani and English by students of the Azerbaijan University of Languages. The students also recited a poem from the famous epic ‘Leyla Majnun’ by Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi.
Speaking at the event, Abhay Kumar paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore and highlighted his contribution to world literature and culture. The Ambassador spoke about Tagore’s travels around the world, including his visit to Azerbaijan, and recalled that the 150th birth anniversary of the poet was celebrated by the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in Baku in 2011.
Abhay Kumar noted that Tagore’s literary works continue to be widely studied and translated globally. He said that some of Tagore’s renowned works, including Gitanjali and Nationalism, are available at the Azerbaijan National Library. The Ambassador also praised the literary legacy of Nizami Ganjavi and highlighted the depth and sensitivity of his works.
One of the highlights of the evening was the rendition of a Tagore poem by Ambassador Abhay Kumar. The event also featured an audiovisual presentation on the life and journey of Rabindranath Tagore, including original clips from his travels and a rendition of India’s national anthem in Tagore’s own voice.
At the end of the event, Ambassador Abhay Kumar distributed gift hampers containing collections of books to participating students from the Azerbaijan University of Languages. The evening concluded with Indian snacks and informal cultural interactions among the guests.
