IMF: Middle Corridor Could Strengthen Azerbaijan’s Economic Growth Potential

Baku: The development of the Middle Corridor and green energy corridors creates important opportunities to enhance Azerbaijan’s economic growth potential, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) told APA-Economics in response to an inquiry.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the IMF noted that expanding connectivity and the formation of new transport routes are significant for advancing Azerbaijan’s export diversification agenda and strengthening private sector participation in the economy.

The Fund’s assessment highlights that for Azerbaijan to fully capitalize on these opportunities, it should continue implementing the necessary reforms. The IMF emphasized the importance of improving the performance and governance of state-owned enterprises, gradually reducing the state’s role in the economy, strengthening anti-corruption measures, and deepening capital markets.

The IMF also pointed out that the geographic position of the Caucasus and Central Asia-linking Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East-gives the region exceptional potential as a transit and investment hub. Shifts in global trade and energy flows following the war in Ukraine have increased interest in routes such as the Middle Corridor.

The Fund added that major infrastructure initiatives, implemented with the support of multilateral and bilateral partners, are aimed at closing logistics gaps and enhancing regional connectivity.

According to the IMF, unlocking this potential will require strengthened governance, harmonized trade frameworks, developed financial markets, coordinated policies, and sustained investment.
