Azerbaijan Raises Retirement Age for Prosecutors to 65

Baku: The retirement age for service in the prosecutor’s office in Azerbaijan is being increased. During a session of the Milli Majlis, proposed amendments to the draft law ‘On Service in Prosecutor’s Offices’ were discussed, resulting in the decision to raise the age limit for serving in the prosecutor’s office from 60 to 65.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the current law allows for the length of service in the prosecution to be extended up to the age of 65, with each extension lasting no more than one year. Prosecutors who have served at least 35 years in the prosecution service until reaching the retirement age, excluding those deprived of special ranks, are entitled to a pension based on age and may be relieved from service upon their request. The proposed amendment ensures that prosecutors with such long service records will maintain the right to an age-based pension.

The amendment also introduces reaching the maximum age limit for service as grounds for terminating a prosecutor’s service. The main objective of this amendment is to allow experienced prosecutors to continue working, thereby increasing the efficiency of prosecution bodies.

The law will apply to current prosecutors as well as those appointed after it comes into effect. After thorough discussions, the draft law was adopted in its first reading.
