Vusala Mahirgizi Calls for United Front Against Social Media Prejudice

Shamakhi: Vusala Mahirgizi, Director General of APA Media Group, emphasized the need for a collective effort to combat prejudice spread by foreign influences on social media during her speech at the “Modern Information Space and Freedom of Religious Belief” conference.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Mahirgizi highlighted the unique position of Azerbaijan in protecting religious values, noting that religion in the country is kept separate from politics and is based on core values. She stated that Azerbaijan is one of the few nations where religious sensitivities are not exploited for political purposes, and the emphasis on enlightenment ensures that political influence does not encroach into religious spaces.

Mahirgizi further stated that Azerbaijan serves as an exemplary model in safeguarding Islamic values and religious identity. She drew parallels between historical efforts to establish religious monuments and the current initiatives led by Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, such as constructing mosques in Karabakh and East Zangezur. These efforts, Mahirgizi argued, signify a renewal of national and religious identity, serving as a reminder of Azerbaijan’s presence and commitment to Islamic heritage.

She also stressed the importance of specialized knowledge among journalists covering religious topics, advocating for continuous dialogue between the media and religious organizations, as well as the Institute of Theology. Mahirgizi underscored the critical role of the media in preventing hate speech and promoting tolerance.

In addressing the challenges posed by foreign influences, Mahirgizi called for unity against the spread of ignorance and manipulation through social media. She noted the importance of patience, tolerance, and respect for differing views, urging media and religious leaders to remain vigilant against attempts to create an aggressive image of believers. The collective fight against these influences is crucial, Mahirgizi concluded, to protect the integrity of Azerbaijani society and its values.
