Baku: President Ilham Aliyev has urged former colonial powers to extend financial and technical support to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) during his address at the Leaders’ Summit of the Small Islands Developing States on Climate Change. The summit was held on November 13 as part of COP29, where Azerbaijan serves as the host country. President Aliyev stressed the importance of amplifying the voices of SIDS on the global stage, noting that Azerbaijan’s relationship with these nations has reached new heights.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Aliyev specifically called upon developed countries with colonial histories to provide tangible support to small island states. His appeal highlights the need for a collaborative approach to address the unique challenges faced by these vulnerable nations in the face of climate change.
