Parliament of Kazakhstan withdraws Nazarbayev’s status as chairman of board of trustees of Nazarbayev University, schools and foundation

Ex-president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev lost the status of chairman of the supreme board of trustees of Nazarbayev University, Nazarbayev intellectual schools and Nazarbayev Foundation.

The relevant provisions are contained in the law on amendments to certain legislative acts of Kazakhstan on professional qualifications, state awards, social security and education, adopted on Thursday by the country’s parliament.

“Amendments are envisaged to determine the powers of the head of state to create a supreme board of trustees of autonomous educational organizations,” the Senate explained.

According to the law, the chairman of the supreme board of trustees is the president of Kazakhstan or a person appointed by the president. The regulation on the Supreme Board of Trustees is approved by the Chairman of the Supreme Board of Trustees. In the current wording, the first chairman of the supreme board of trustees is the first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The educational grant “Orken”, intended to pay for the education of gifted children in Nazarbayev intellectual schools, will now be established by the head of state, and not by the first president.
