Bishkek: The Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan has put forward a proposal to impose a three-year moratorium on commercial fishing, targeting especially valuable fish species. This initiative is aimed at addressing the ecological challenges facing the country’s major reservoirs.
According to Trend News Agency, the proposed regulatory framework has been introduced for stakeholder engagement and public discourse. The regulations are set to be enforced across reservoirs of national importance, including Toktogul, Bazar-Korgon, Kirov, Kurpsai, Shamaldysai, Tash-Kumyr, and Uch-Korgon.
The ministry has highlighted that illegal and unregulated fishing activities have severely impacted the ecological balance, leading to a decline in fish populations. A lack of effective protection measures, controlled breeding techniques, and limited biological research have further worsened the situation.
Authorities emphasized the necessity of enhancing fish stock conservation efforts and initiating artificial propagation programs to restore fish populations alongside the moratorium.
