Kazakhstan to ban sale of energy drinks to persons aged under 21

Kazakhstan will ban the sale of energy drinks to persons aged under 21. A corresponding amendment has been made to the legislation and is being considered by the lower house of the Parliament. Health Minister Azhar Giniyat expects that the law will be adopted in near future, Vlast.kz reports.

“The lower house of the Parliament is considering a norm initiated by deputies to ban the sale of energy drinks to persons aged under 21 within the framework of the bill “On the Health of the People,” Giniyat said during a briefing in the government on Tuesday.

She emphasized that the Ministry of Health supported this norm, since “youth and children, by drinking energy drinks, harm their health.”

“This norm is still being discussed, it has not been adopted. We expect that this bill will soon be sent to the Senate,” concluded Giniyat.

According to the Ministry of Health, Kazakhstan has problems in developing healthy lifestyle skills among the population. In particular, 21% of the adult population uses tobacco. 10% of adolescents aged 11-15 years regularly vape, 17.5% consume energy and sugary drinks, and 15% are overweight.
