Baku: The commissioning of the Trkiye-Syria gas pipeline marks a significant step towards reducing the electricity crisis in Syria, facilitated by the export of Azerbaijani gas through the newly operational pipeline. This development was highlighted by Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti, Director General of the Qatar Development Fund, during the pipeline’s inauguration ceremony.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the project’s primary objective is to address the electricity crisis in Syria by leveraging the pipeline’s capacity to transmit Azerbaijani gas. Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti emphasized that the project’s daily transmission capacity stands at 3.4 million cubic meters of natural gas, which amounts to an annual capacity of 1.2 billion cubic meters.
Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti further explained that the natural gas transported through this pipeline will be converted into electricity in Syria, significantly increasing electricity transmission hours by approximately 40%. This surge will allow for electricity availability to rise to around five hours per day, potentially benefiting over five million subscribers in the region.
The inauguration of the Trkiye-Syria natural gas pipeline took place in Yavuzlu village, Kilis province, Trkiye. This milestone has enabled the commencement of Azerbaijani gas exports to Syria via Trkiye, marking a new era in regional energy cooperation.
Preparations have been completed for the transportation of natural gas under an agreement between SOCAR and Syria. Initially, 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per annum will be directed to Syria, traversing Kilis and reaching power plants in Aleppo and Homs for electricity generation. This initiative aims to achieve a production capacity of approximately 1,200-1,300 megawatts.
