Ex-head of Almaty region police department who fled Kazakhstan through Kyrgyzstan pleads guilty

Serik Kudebayev, former head of Almaty region police department, pleaded guilty in the case of illegal border crossing, reports Informburo.kz
The former major general delivered his last word at a session in the Kegen district court.
“I fully admit my guilt and support the lawyer’s petition,” said Serik Kudebayev.
Given the confession and remorse of the defendant, the defense insists on imposing a “fair” punishment in the form of a fine.
Serik Kudebayev is accused of deliberately illegally crossing the state border of Kazakhstan. The offense is punishable by a fine of up to 3.45 million tenge or imprisonment for up to one year.
Kudebayev received a petition to conclude a procedural agreement at the last session. The defendant supported him.
During the trial, the ex-head of Almaty region police department escaped. He did not appear in court on April 3. The police major general crossed the state border of Kazakhstan with Kyrgyzstan and flew from Bishkek to Istanbul on the same day. He was put on the international wanted list.
Serik Kudebayev on April 28 was found guilty of abuse of power, which entailed grave consequences, and torture during the January events. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison to be served in a medium security facility.
