The Danish government is considering a draft bill that would ban the public burning of religious books, the Ministry of Justice reported. “The bill would criminalize the public burning of a Bible or Quran,” the statement said. The Danish Ministry of Justice noted that such public actions have recently led to the fact that the country is increasingly perceived in many parts of the world as contributing to ridicule and vilification of other states and religions. The ministry stressed that this could have serious consequences. “Recently we have seen a lot of Quran burnings in Denmark. These are mocking actions that damage the safety of Danish citizens both abroad and at home,” the Ministry cites Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard. According to him, the government has put forward a bill that aims to criminalize this kind of behavior.
