Azerbaijani Ombudsperson appeals to Ombudsmen Association of OIC on Khojaly genocide

The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva attended the General Meeting of the Ombudsmen Association of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC OA) in Istanbul and addressed an appeal regarding the Khojaly genocide, the Office of the Ombudsman told APA.

It is noted that during her speech at the event, Sabina Aliyeva said that important initiatives are being implemented in the field of raising awareness within the framework of the activities of the OIC OA, that the Ombudsman Institution of Azerbaijan is an active participant in these efforts, and that experiences are exchanged with other member institutions.

S. Aliyeva highlighted that injustices against Islamic countries, including Azerbaijan, and double standards in international relations continue.

The Commissioner for Human Rights said that the mines buried by Armenia in Azerbaijani lands liberated from occupation continue to end the lives of military personnel and civilians, and so far more than 300 people have become victims of mine terrorism. The Ombudsperson informed about the Khojaly tragedy committed 31 years ago and said that this genocide is evidence of the ethnic cleansing policy, which resulted in a gross violation of the rights and freedoms stipulated in international documents. S. Aliyeva stressed the need for nations and international organizations to give an international political and legal assessment of the Khojaly genocide in order to restore justice.

In order to prevent such a massacre from happening again, and to bring the criminals to justice, the commissioner appealed to the OIC OA to raise the issues before the relevant international organizations.
