Kilis: SOCAR’s activities in Syria and the region are planned to be expanded in the future, Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov informed journalists at the opening ceremony of the Trkiye-Syria natural gas pipeline.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the gas exported to Syria is supplied and sold by SOCAR, rather than through consortia. The minister emphasized that the delivery of Azerbaijani gas to the Middle East on competitive terms was facilitated by this project.
The minister highlighted Azerbaijan’s capability to supply energy not only towards the west but also in eastern and southern directions. The project marks Azerbaijan’s strategic expansion and aims for medium to long-term activities in these new markets.
The inauguration ceremony of the Trkiye-Syria natural gas pipeline took place in Yavuzlu village in Kilis province, Trkiye. This marks the commencement of Azerbaijani gas exports to Syria via Trkiye.
Preparations for the transportation of natural gas, as outlined in the recent agreement between SOCAR and Syria, have been completed. In the initial phase, 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year will be sent to Syria. The gas will transit through Kilis and supply power plants in Aleppo and Homs, aiming to generate approximately 1,200-1,300 megawatts of electricity.
