Baku: An atlas of maps obtained from world archives is being compiled at the Institute of History, announced Isa Habibbeyli, President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and Chairman of the Toponymy Commission, during a conference on the “Development Strategy of the Azerbaijani Language as the State Language: Current Status and Prospects.”
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Habibbeyli emphasized that the maps, which cover the period before the Soviet era, will illustrate the extensive geographical spread of Azerbaijani toponyms. This endeavor is closely linked to linguistics, geography, and Azerbaijani national identity. He highlighted the significance of the ideas and calls related to the Azerbaijani language, which were part of a historical speech delivered at ANAS. The mother-tongue policy initiated by national leader Heydar Aliyev is being continued today by the President, focusing on the native language as well as the state language.
