Turkic States Aim for Unified Information Strategy, Says Azerbaijani Analyst

Baku: Turkic states are moving towards a unified strategy in the information space, the Azerbaijani political analyst Azer Garayev told Trend. He highlighted that the 7th meeting of ministers and high officials in charge of media and information of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), held in Baku, marks a crucial turning point that will shape the future of information policy among Turkic nations.

According to Trend News Agency, the meeting signifies the beginning of enhanced media cooperation among Turkic states, considering the level of participants, the strategic nature of topics discussed, and the potential long-term impact of the decisions made. Garayev emphasized that the choice of Baku as the meeting location underscores Azerbaijan’s leading role in the region concerning information security, media reforms, and the development of trans-regional communication platforms.

Garayev outlined three main reasons for Azerbaijan’s prominence in this area. First, Azerbaijan has extensive experience in information warfare, especially following the 44-day war, making combating disinformation a central element of its national security policy. Second, hosting international forums like the Shusha Global Media Forum has positioned Azerbaijan as a hub for regional media dialogue. Third, Baku serves as a bridge for the integration of Turkic states, both politically and culturally, further solidifying the meeting’s role in shaping the regional information agenda.

Garayev noted that Azerbaijan’s priorities during the event were tackling disinformation and enhancing media literacy. He explained that preventing disinformation and fake narratives is viewed as a key component of Azerbaijan’s national security framework. This approach involves not only defensive measures but also international cooperation, development of fact-checking mechanisms, and the expansion of media literacy programs. Reforms in media legislation, registration of media entities on a unified platform, and ensuring transparency in journalistic activities were presented in a regional context during the meeting.

The analyst underscored that the five-year strategy from 2027 through 2031 represents the first long-term strategic framework in the media field for OTS, showcasing the organization’s strengthened institutional approach to information policy. He concluded that the meeting in Baku signifies institutionalization in the field of information and media within the Turkic world, deepening coordination, developing the media economy, and ensuring regional information security. This gathering is seen not only as an exchange of media practices but also as a substantial step towards establishing a unified ecosystem in the information space of the Turkic states.
