New york: The Security Council must be reformed to be more representative and effective, said Tofig Musayev, Azerbaijan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, as he addressed the U.N. Security Council open debate on the theme “Leadership for Peace” under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security.”
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Musayev emphasized Azerbaijan’s own experience as an example, highlighting the need for international law and the Charter principles to be applied consistently and without selectivity. He stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and non-interference in their internal affairs as crucial measures for maintaining international peace and security.
Musayev advocated for inclusive multilateralism, emphasizing that all states, regardless of their size and particularly developing countries, should have the chance to participate equally in global decision-making. He reiterated the necessity for the Security Council to undergo reforms to enhance its representativeness and effectiveness.
Azerbaijan’s commitment to multilateralism was underscored by its hosting of the 29th Climate Change Conference last year and its leadership roles in various international platforms such as the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Turkic States, and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia. Musayev noted that Azerbaijan’s full-fledged membership in the Consultative Meeting of Heads of State of Central Asia will bolster its ability to contribute to multilateralism.
Musayev concluded by reaffirming Azerbaijan’s dedication to promoting peace agendas both regionally and globally, aiming to ensure that the multilateral system becomes more effective and better equipped to fulfill its objectives.
