Solving climate change requires large-scale measures – Azerbaijani deputy minister

BAKU: August 28. Solving the climate change problem requires the implementation of comprehensive, large-scale, and long-term measures, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Vugar Karimov highlighted at the ‘Role of Water Management Systems in Climate-Resilient Agriculture’ COP29 round table, Trend reports.

He noted that as part of the country’s contribution to global climate change mitigation under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Azerbaijan has set a conditional target to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2050.

‘This year, Azerbaijan also joined the Global Methane Pledge (GMP), which aims to reduce global methane emissions. An updated Nationally Determined Contributions Document (NDC) and a Long-Term Low Carbon Development Strategy (LTS) are currently being developed in alignment with the Paris Agreement,’ he said.

He emphasized the need to sensitize agricultural producers about climate change and adapt their production practices to current climate
realities.

Karimov also mentioned that preventing the negative effects of climate change requires strategies developed as part of adaptation and mitigation efforts.

‘All eyes of the international community are on our country this year, particularly regarding environmental protection and mitigation activities. Hosting the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the highest platform for discussing global climate change is a testament to the trust and successful cooperation we have built with international organizations.

The decision to hold COP29 in Azerbaijan reflects our country’s commitment to a green future. The declaration of 2024 as the ‘Solidarity Year for Green World’ by President Ilham Aliyev underscores the importance of this mission. Transitioning to a greener and more sustainable future is not only an environmental imperative but also an economic opportunity. Achieving the goals set for this new strategic phase requires collective efforts,’
the deputy minister added.

This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70-80,000 foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP – the Conference of the Parties – is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
