Press Council Addresses 815 Complaints During Reporting Period

Baku:A total of 815 complaints were received by the Press Council during the reporting period. Of these, 691 were resolved at the Secretariat level with agreements reached between the parties involved, as stated by the Chairman of the Press Council, Rashad Majid, at the 9th Congress of Azerbaijani journalists.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the remaining 124 complaints were forwarded to the Council’s Complaints Commission due to unresolved agreements. Out of these, 86 cases were resolved at the commission level. For the remaining 38 cases, opinions were submitted to the Board of Directors, which subsequently made decisions. These decisions highlighted journalists’ negligence in covering opposing parties’ positions, with relevant recommendations provided.

It was also noted that, aside from the formal complaints, the Council received a significant number of verbal appeals, approximately double the number of officially submitted complaints. Although many verbal complaints expressed dissatisfaction with journalists, they often fell outside the Press Council’s jurisdiction. Nonetheless, a considerable number of issues were resolved through verbal negotiations.
