President: Ending War and Bloodshed Was a Historic Achievement

Davos: “It was a historical achievement last August when two countries initialed a peace agreement, thus putting an end to three decades plus of war and bloodshed,” President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said in his speech at a panel discussion on “Defining the Economic Identity of Eurasia” held within the framework of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, APA’s correspondent dispatched to Davos reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Aliyev emphasized the uniqueness of the peace deal, highlighting that it was signed less than two years after the last bloody clash. He noted that strong political will and a commitment to peace from both sides made reconciliation possible in a relatively short period. The president pointed out that the agreement is now yielding practical results, marking a significant transformation as both countries begin to cooperate. President Aliyev mentioned that Azerbaijan has already started transporting critical oil products to Armenia, which has helped reduce prices, a development that seemed unimaginable just a few years ago.

President Aliyev stressed that neither Armenia nor Azerbaijan had ever experienced peace since gaining independence in 1991, as they were already in a military standoff. However, the current peaceful situation has been ongoing for five to six months, which both nations are enjoying. He urged both countries to demonstrate the benefits of living in peace to gain full support from their societies. President Aliyev believes that the peace agreement is a tremendous benefit not only to Armenia and Azerbaijan but also to the Southern Caucasus region, setting an example of how once-hostile countries can transition to cooperation.
