President Aliyev Highlights Global Uncertainty and Regional Progress at UN ESCAP Session

New york: President Ilham Aliyev addressed the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), emphasizing the vital role of the organization in promoting sustainable development and fostering regional cooperation. He noted the necessity of bolstering multilateralism during these times of global uncertainty.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, President Aliyev pointed to escalating geopolitical tensions and ongoing conflicts as indicators of the fragility of international peace and security, threatening the development gains made over the past decades. He affirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting the significant transformations in the South Caucasus since his previous address to the body in 2021. Azerbaijan has reinstated its sovereignty and territorial integrity and has taken steps towards peace with Armenia, with notable progress achieved during the Washington Summit hosted by former President Donald Trump.

President Aliyev highlighted the positive outcomes of peace initiatives, including the commencement of trade relations and transit facilitation for Armenia by Azerbaijan. Reciprocal visits by civil society representatives are helping to build confidence between the two nations. He also mentioned Azerbaijan’s extensive reconstruction projects in the liberated territories, which were previously devastated under occupation. The Great Return Program is seeing success, with over 80,000 people returning to the Garabagh and East Zangezur regions to rebuild their communities. Despite these advancements, landmines remain a significant humanitarian and development challenge, necessitating increased international cooperation. Since the conflict ended in 2020, more than 400 Azerbaijani civilians have been harmed by landmine explosions.
