Iran Accuses U.S. of Attacking Vessels and Civilians Near Hormuz

Tehran: Iran’s main military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, announced on Thursday night that the U.S. military attacked two Iranian vessels near the Strait of Hormuz and conducted airstrikes on civilian areas in Hormozgan province and Qeshm Island, with support from some regional allies.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Ebrahim Zolfaghari, the spokesman for the headquarters, condemned the U.S. military actions as “aggressive and terrorist,” stating that they violated the ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States. He detailed that one of the targeted vessels was an oil tanker traveling from Jask toward the Strait of Hormuz, while the other was entering the waterway near Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. The civilian areas affected were Bandar-e Khamir and Sirik in Hormozgan province.

Zolfaghari further mentioned that Iran’s armed forces promptly retaliated by targeting U.S. military vessels east of the Strait of Hormuz and south of Chabahar port, inflicting significant damage. He issued a stern warning to the United States and its allies, emphasizing that Iran would respond decisively to any form of aggression.

Iranian media outlets reported explosions in southern cities and Tehran. The official news agency IRNA noted that two loud sounds were heard west of Tehran, followed by the activation of air defense systems. The semi-official Mehr news agency claimed a U.S. and Israeli attack on a naval base in Minab County, Hormozgan province, occurred early Friday, citing Minab’s Governor Mohammad Radmehr, who confirmed that there were no casualties.

The conflict follows a ceasefire agreement reached on April 8, after 40 days of hostilities that began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28.
