Baku:Hungary is commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution, a pivotal moment in its history marked by the nation’s stand against communist oppression and Soviet occupation. This historic day, October 23, is not only a national holiday but also symbolizes Hungary’s enduring struggle for freedom, independence, and sovereignty.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched a new website, https//1956memorials.hu/, as a virtual memorial to preserve the legacy of the 1956 Revolution. This site serves as a comprehensive database based on citizen science and collective memory, inviting contributions of personal recollections and human stories connected to the revolution from people worldwide, including those from Azerbaijan.
The revolution began as a student demonstration on October 23, 1956, quickly escalating into a nationwide uprising. Although Soviet tanks eventually crushed the movement on November 4, 1956, the revolution’s moral impact endured, influencing Hungary’s eventual proclamation as a republic in 1989. Today, Hungary continues to honor those who fought for freedom and reflect on the responsibilities inherited from their sacrifices.
The Hungarian Ambassador to Azerbaijan highlighted the shared values of independence and sovereignty between Hungary and Azerbaijan. Despite different historical paths, both nations have faced the ambitions of great powers and understand the importance of shaping their own futures. Since 2023, Hungary and Azerbaijan have enjoyed an enhanced strategic partnership, encompassing diverse areas such as political cooperation, energy, investments, and cultural exchange.
The ambassador noted the deep-rooted bonds between the peoples of Hungary and Azerbaijan, strengthened by mutual respect and recognition of similar national characters. The partnership is further enriched by active academic, scientific, and civil society collaborations, with direct flights between Budapest and Baku facilitating this close relationship.
