Gara Garayev’s ‘Adagio’ Included in Swedish Music Curriculum

Katrineholm:A piano-and-violin arrangement of ‘Adagio’ from ‘Seven Beauties,’ a ballet by acclaimed Azerbaijani composer Gara Garayev, has been integrated into the curriculum at Katrineholm Music School in Sweden. The initiative was proposed by Azerbaijani pianist Aynur Malikova, who resides in Sweden.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Malikova aimed to highlight the richness of Azerbaijani classical music in Sweden and introduce the nation’s musical heritage to a broader audience. She sent the sheet music and a digital recording of Garayev’s composition to Katrineholm Music School.

Malikova shared that the school’s principal, Hanna Moen, and violin teacher Sarah Carlsson were profoundly impressed by the composition’s musical beauty, emotional depth, and expressive power upon hearing it.

Malikova emphasized that this effort goes beyond merely adding a musical work to a school’s curriculum. It is a means of promoting Azerbaijani culture on an international level, introducing Swedish students to the works of Gara Garayev, and fostering a cultural exchange between the two nations through music.

She also noted that a significant achievement of this initiative is the ability of Azerbaijani music to resonate with listeners and secure its place within another country’s educational framework. This marks the second Azerbaijani composition to be included in Swedish music education, following Arif Malikov’s ‘Komde’s Dreams’ at Lidingö Music School.
