Dutch Ambassador Clarifies Parliament’s Controversial Document on Azerbaijan

Baku: A document adopted by the Dutch Parliament does not affect our relations, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Azerbaijan, Marianne de Jong, said at a press conference, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the ambassador commented on the dissatisfaction in Azerbaijan caused by decisions adopted in the Dutch Parliament. She explained that the Dutch Parliament operates independently of the government and that the executive branch cannot influence parliamentary decisions. The ambassador emphasized that, although there is a tendency for pro-Armenian forces to have a stronger voice in the Dutch Parliament, the government’s stance remains unchanged.

The diplomat acknowledged the presence of a significant Azerbaijani community in the Netherlands, suggesting that they might be represented in the Dutch Parliament in the future. She reiterated that the parliament serves as a platform for discussion, and while decisions are made independently, the government continues to maintain balanced relations with both Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Marianne de Jong highlighted that the Netherlands is committed to supporting the peace process in the region, engaging with both countries to foster dialogue. She expressed optimism that parliamentary documents would not impact intergovernmental relations, noting the European Union’s balanced approach in promoting peace.

The ambassador concluded by reassuring that the government’s position remains stable and that ongoing work with Azerbaijan will continue in a constructive manner.
