COP29 President-Designate: We need to create a stronger climate education system from primary school to university

Approximately half of the children in the world live in countries that are at extremely high risk from the impacts of climate change, Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President-Designate, said on the 4th day of the Baku Climate Action Week, APA reports.

He noted that UNICEF’s 2023 report highlights that climate-related disasters hinder nearly 40 million children from receiving an education each year.

“However, young people are among the strongest voices for action. The COP29 Presidency is committed to ensuring ongoing attention to the specific needs of youth. This means placing the voices of children and young people at the center of the process,” COP29 President-Designate said.

Mukhtar Babayev emphasized the need to create a stronger climate education system from primary school to university: “By doing this, we can help young people acquire the green skills they need. This allows us to respond to the ambitions of children and young people. In a World Bank survey, 60% of participating youth reported that they did n
ot receive adequate information about climate change in school. The initiative will particularly include efforts to support climate education through the Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience. By investing in climate education at all levels, we are investing in climate action for current and future generations.”
