Baku: The Milli Majlis, Azerbaijan’s national parliament, has formally adopted a decision to cut ties with the European Parliament, citing ongoing anti-Azerbaijan activities and unfulfilled promises, APA reports. The decision marks a significant shift in Azerbaijan’s foreign policy and parliamentary relations, as it moves to suspend cooperation with European parliamentary bodies and initiate withdrawal from the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the decision was read by Vice-Speaker Ziyafat Asgarov, emphasizing Azerbaijan’s commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development through open dialogue. However, the European Parliament’s actions, described as destructive and contrary to these principles, have prompted the Milli Majlis to take decisive action.
The decision highlights several grievances, including the European Parliament’s perceived disregard for international law and justice, its alleged bias during the 30-year occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia, and its failure to recognize the human rights of Azerbaijani refugees. The European Parliament’s resolutions, described as containing false information and accusations against Azerbaijan, have further strained relations.
In response, the Milli Majlis has suspended all cooperation with the European Parliament, terminated its participation in the European Union-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, and begun the process of withdrawing from the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly. A commission led by Ziyafat Asgarov has been established to oversee these actions, with several members appointed to facilitate the transition.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova reiterated the reasons for the suspension, noting past efforts to restore relations in 2016 and the continued bias observed over the past decade. The decision underscores Azerbaijan’s stance against what it perceives as the European Parliament’s interference and opposition to peace and stability in the region.
The Milli Majlis plans to issue an official statement regarding the European Parliament’s activities against Azerbaijan, further solidifying its position and outlining the parameters for future diplomatic engagements.
