Azerbaijan Summons Belgian and Dutch Ambassadors Over Parliamentary Documents

Baku: Azerbaijan has summoned the ambassadors of Belgium and the Netherlands to express a strong protest against parliamentary documents adopted by both countries. On 20 April, Julien de Fraipont, the Ambassador of Belgium, and Marianne de Jong, the Ambassador of the Netherlands, were separately called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, according to a statement released by the Azerbaijan MFA, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the meetings were held to express Azerbaijan’s concerns regarding the documents adopted by the Parliaments of Belgium and the Netherlands on 16 April 2026. The Azerbaijani government perceives these documents as an attempt to undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the ongoing peace process with Armenia. The Ministry emphasized that the documents are based on false and unfounded assessments, which reflect an anti-Azerbaijani bias.

The Azerbaijani MFA also noted that the claims within the documents constitute violations of international law and represent interference in Azerbaijan’s rule of law. The documents’ references to Azerbaijan’s sovereign territories and accusations of violations of Armenia’s territorial integrity, the rights of ethnic Armenians, and alleged unlawful detention of persons of Armenian origin were rejected by Azerbaijan.

Additionally, Azerbaijan highlighted the paradox of these documents being adopted around the same time as a meeting between the Speakers of the Parliaments of Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Azerbaijani side urged Belgium and the Netherlands to take measures to prevent anti-Azerbaijani groups within their Parliaments from affecting bilateral relations negatively.
