Azerbaijan Sets New Rules for Relocating Cultural Monuments

Baku: Azerbaijan is introducing new regulations regarding the handling of its cultural monuments. The proposed amendment to the Law ‘On the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments’ was discussed during a joint meeting of the Parliamentary Committees on Law Policy and State Building and on Culture. The amendment emphasizes that any alteration or destruction of monuments, as well as their relocation, requires approval from the relevant authority designated by the executive power.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the draft amendment specifies that not only the alteration or destruction of monuments is prohibited, but also any relocation without proper coordination. Additionally, construction, installation, restoration, reconstruction, conservation, or landscaping work that could violate the inviolability of these monuments or pose a threat to them is also prohibited under the proposed rules.

The existing law already restricts altering the artistic and aesthetic appearance of monuments, as well as demolishing them or conducting any repair, construction, agricultural, or other work that may pose a danger to these cultural structures.
