Baku: Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY), an AZCON Holding company, is advancing with extensive reconstruction projects on railway infrastructure to ensure traffic safety and reliable passenger and cargo transportation, ADY informed APA-Economics.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, strategic projects in the liberated territories are crucial in transforming the region’s transport infrastructure. On May 10, 2025, President Ilham Aliyev opened the Aghdam Railway and Bus Terminal Complex, resuming regular passenger services to Karabakh after 30 years. The Baku-Aghdam-Baku route has quickly gained popularity among passengers since its launch.
The modernization of the railway network is a priority for ADY due to increasing demand and rapid development. The Yevlakh-Barda railway line will undergo major rehabilitation for the first time since 1967. The outdated infrastructure currently restricts train speeds to 10-60 km/h. Once the rehabilitation is complete, train speeds will increase, reducing travel time significantly.
During the upgrade of the Yevlakh-Barda line, train services on the Baku-Aghdam-Baku route will be temporarily halted. The last trips on this route will occur on May 9 and 10. The project will align railway infrastructure with global standards to ensure safer, more reliable transportation and sustainable, faster rail connectivity. Safety measures in residential areas along the railway will also be enhanced.
The Yevlakh-Barda line’s reconstruction will help develop modern railway infrastructure from Yevlakh to Khankendi in the Karabakh region. This project will aid in creating an integrated railway network across the country, enhancing regional transport connectivity. Consequently, passenger and cargo transportation efficiency and reliability will improve significantly.
Simultaneously, ADY is progressing with the Aghdam-Khankendi railway line construction and the Khankendi Railway and Bus Terminal Complex, which was inaugurated by President Ilham Aliyev last July. The Aghdam-Khankendi line is the next step in restoring passenger train services from Baku to Khankendi.
These measures reflect ADY’s long-term goal to develop a more reliable, safe, and sustainable railway network. ADY appreciates passengers’ patience and understanding as they work to provide more comfortable, faster, and safer travel options.
