Azerbaijan Press Council Warns Against Fake Messages in Journalists’ Names

Baku:The Azerbaijan Press Council has issued a warning concerning the creation of fake WhatsApp accounts in the names of prominent journalists. These accounts are being used to send various messages, raising concerns about the potential impact on individuals and public perception.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, law enforcement agencies have identified these activities as being conducted by organized cybercrime networks operating outside Azerbaijan. Utilizing artificial intelligence algorithms and specialized software, these groups are targeting public officials, employees of various enterprises and organizations, journalists, and other citizens.

The warning highlights that these incidents could become a concerning trend if not addressed. Suspicious messages, even those appearing to be from known contacts, should not be trusted, answered, or shared without verification. The Council stressed the importance of verifying the authenticity of information, especially concerning public and political affairs, to prevent misleading perceptions and damage to reputations.

The Council urged both journalists and the public to exercise caution in the digital space, verify information sources thoroughly, and avoid spreading potential provocations through fake accounts.
