Accra:Commissioner for Human Rights Sabina Aliyeva has announced the observance of ‘Child Rights Month’ in Azerbaijan from October 20 to November 20. This initiative coincides with the anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, aiming to highlight the importance of children’s rights.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Aliyeva emphasized the responsibility of states and societies in ensuring equal opportunities for all children, supporting their development in various aspects, and safeguarding their wellbeing. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989, recognizing children as independent rights holders, a document Azerbaijan ratified, committing to uphold these rights.
Azerbaijan has been actively prioritizing children’s rights through legislative reforms and expanded access to quality services. Recent legal developments include the adoption of the “Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the Rights of the Child” and restrictions on children’s social media use, aligning with modern regulatory requirements.
The declaration of 2026 as the “Year of Urban Planning and Architecture” is set to enhance children’s living environments. Post-conflict reconstruction efforts are also focused on creating necessary infrastructure and services for children in liberated areas.
In the face of globalization and digital advancements, Azerbaijan is committed to updating its children’s rights policies and enhancing public awareness. The Ombudsman continues to collaborate with state bodies, civil society organizations, and international partners to promote and protect children’s rights.
The ‘Child Rights Month’ campaign aims to increase public engagement and awareness of children’s rights, and Aliyeva calls on stakeholders to participate actively in this initiative, ensuring robust protection and focus on children’s rights.
