Azerbaijan Faces Agricultural Challenges Amid Climate Concerns

Baku:Azerbaijan’s agricultural sector is confronting significant challenges, including water scarcity and land degradation. These issues were highlighted by MP and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion Nigar Arpadarai during her address at a World Food Day event.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Arpadarai emphasized that agriculture is a vital component of Azerbaijan’s economy, supporting livelihoods and community development. However, the sector is under pressure from rising temperatures and the need for increased productivity.

Arpadarai pointed out that food security is directly tied to the efficient management of water resources, farmer resilience, and the sustainable growth of the agricultural sector. She stressed the importance of innovation in maximizing the value gained from water, land, and energy resources.

At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan took steps to unite the international community around stronger climate action and expanded climate financing. The event also focused on aligning ambitious climate goals with practical solutions.

Arpadarai noted the importance of addressing food waste, which not only impacts environmental sustainability but also presents economic opportunities. Reducing food waste can contribute to food security by conserving the resources invested in food production and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions from decomposing organic waste.
