Azerbaijan Emerges as Central Hub for North-South Transport Corridor

Baku: Azerbaijan has solidified its role as a central player in the Eurasian logistics landscape, hosting the 83rd meeting of the CIS Council on Railway Transport. This gathering, marked by the signing of a trilateral memorandum with Russia and Iran, underscores Azerbaijan’s strategic importance in the development of the International North-South Transport Corridor. The memorandum focuses on tariff coordination, the creation of a unified tariff system, and the initiation of regular block trains, which aims to create a seamless logistics chain.

According to Trend News Agency, this development positions Azerbaijan as a reliable link for both Moscow and Tehran. The absence of viable alternatives, such as an eastern bypass through Central Asia or maritime routes, highlights the strategic choice to invest in Azerbaijan’s infrastructure. Additionally, Russia and Iran are actively working to address bottlenecks, such as the construction of the Rasht-Astara section in Iran, demonstrating their commitment to this corridor.

Azerbaijan is rapidly advancing its section of the corridor, with significant projects like the Sumgayit-Yalama and Horadiz-Agbend lines underway. The country aims to boost North-South freight volumes significantly in the coming years. Tehran acknowledges Azerbaijan’s efforts to enhance its domestic railway infrastructure, which is expected to increase freight volumes.

Azerbaijan’s transit reliability is further evidenced by successful shipments of Kazakh and Russian wheat to Armenia, facilitated by Azerbaijan’s agreement to open transit routes. The Astara terminal, a key freight hub, is also expanding its capacity, enhancing the corridor’s potential.

This trilateral memorandum signals a political, economic, and logistical commitment, with Azerbaijan at the heart of the region’s transit strategies. Russia views Azerbaijani territory as the most predictable route to Iran and beyond. International organizations emphasize the readiness of Azerbaijan’s section for digitalization and modernization, reinforcing its status as a dependable partner for Eurasian transit.
