Azerbaijan Bans Creation of Landfills in Tourism Zones

Baku: Allocation and establishment of landfill sites for household waste in tourism and recreation zones has been officially prohibited, the Cabinet of Ministers has amended the ‘Rules for Cleaning City and Other Residential Areas in Accordance with Sanitary, Hygiene and Environmental Standards, Temporary Storage, Regular Transportation, and Disposal of Household Waste’, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, this move aims to protect the ecological integrity of Azerbaijan’s tourism areas. The amendments are part of a broader effort to align waste management practices with sanitary, hygiene, and environmental standards.

The decision underscores the importance of maintaining the aesthetic and environmental quality of regions that attract visitors. By preventing the establishment of waste disposal sites in these zones, the government seeks to enhance the appeal of Azerbaijan’s tourist destinations.

The prohibition reflects a commitment to sustainable tourism practices. Authorities are expected to implement alternative waste management solutions that do not compromise the environment or the tourism potential of these areas.
