Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Friday a three-day ceasefire and a prisoner swap with Russia, an initiative announced by US President Donald Trump as a potential step toward resolving the prolonged conflict, Anadolu Agency reports.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Zelenskyy announced via a statement on US social media platform X that Ukraine had secured Russia’s agreement for a prisoner exchange in the format of 1,000 for 1,000, part of peace negotiations mediated by the US. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to repatriating its citizens from Russian captivity and revealed that preparations for the exchange were underway.
Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude towards Trump and his diplomatic team for their involvement, further stating that Ukraine anticipates US oversight to ensure Russia’s compliance with the agreements.
In a prior statement on Truth Social, Trump confirmed the agreement between Russia and Ukraine on the ceasefire and prisoner exchange. He commended both President Putin and President Zelenskyy for reaching this accord, hoping it marks the beginning of the end of the long-standing conflict.
Trump highlighted ongoing talks aiming to conclude the conflict, which he described as the most significant since World War II, indicating progress toward peace.
