Siena:The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has announced that “Resilience Starts at Home” will be the theme for the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed on October 13. This theme emphasizes the importance of ensuring safety within homes.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction highlights the critical role individuals play in their own safety. Empowerment to take protective action is often hindered by unequal access to crucial resources and decision-making power. When households can access and comprehend the risks they face, they can respond effectively to early warnings and participate in local planning, thus becoming active agents of resilience.
The Early Warnings for All initiative has led to significant progress in hazard alert systems globally. However, the challenge remains to ensure warnings reach all household members in an understandable format. The effectiveness of early warnings depends on households understanding their vulnerability and knowing the protective measures to take. The theme aims to address these challenges by focusing on accessible risk communication and inclusive evacuation planning, while also recognizing the caregiving responsibilities often shouldered by women during disasters.
This theme is aligned with the thirteenth session of the World Urban Forum in 2026, organized by UN-Habitat and the Government of Azerbaijan, under the theme “Housing the world Safe and resilient cities and communities.” It also supports the New Urban Agenda’s commitment to adequate, safe, and affordable housing, and Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
Building resilience at home involves recognizing and enhancing the leadership and contributions of women and local communities in disaster risk reduction.
