BAKU: “We cannot allow the voices of 8 billion people suffering from climate change to be silenced,” declared Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), during the Parliamentary Meeting held in conjunction with COP29. This event was organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Stiell emphasized the necessity for plans to evolve beyond mere words and to manifest as tangible outcomes in both the global economy and on the ground. He called on every nation to escalate their climate efforts and urged parliaments to inspire their national delegations to adopt more ambitious stances. Stiell highlighted the significance of the New Collective Quantified Goal for climate finance as a vital opportunity, particularly for countries bearing the brunt of climate change. He noted the influential role of parliamentary support in driving progress and elevating ambitions in climate negotiations. Stiell
pointed out that parliaments wield significant budgetary power, and without adequate resources, the voices of those affected by climate change risk being ignored.
