Baku: Although Azerbaijan accounts for only 0.11% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the country has emerged as one of the true climate leaders, said Curt Garrigan, Chief of the Sustainable Urban Development Section for the Environment and Development Division of UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), during a panel discussion at the National Urban Forum held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, Garrigan highlighted Azerbaijan’s commitment to reducing emissions by 40% by 2050, marking it as an ambitious target. He emphasized the importance of local authorities and actions in contributing to these targets, a crucial factor for all countries globally. The focus lies in integrating different sectors, strengthening multi-level governance, and collaboratively developing and implementing solutions.
Garrigan also pointed out that financing remains a significant challenge. Identifying measures to achieve targets is insufficient without creating an enabling environment at both national and local levels for their implementation.
