UN Report Highlights Significant Urban Expansion in Azerbaijan

Baku: Cities in Azerbaijan have experienced a remarkable transformation over the past 25 years, with built-up areas more than doubling in size.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, a recent UN report reveals that the area of urbanized land in Azerbaijan expanded from 590.1 square kilometers in 2000 to an anticipated 914.1 square kilometers by 2025. This represents a total increase of 324 square kilometers in built-up areas over the quarter-century span.

The data indicates a substantial growth in urban spaces during this period. The built-up area within cities alone rose from 113.2 square kilometers in 2000 to an expected 211.6 square kilometers by 2025, suggesting that urban centers have nearly doubled in physical size.

The report further details an increase in built-up area per capita, which grew from 72 square meters to 88 square meters overall in the country. In urban settings specifically, this measurement increased from 41 square meters to 50 square meters over the same timeframe.

According to the UN assessment, these statistics underscore that the urban expansion in Azerbaijan is driven not only by a growing population but also by the spatial enlargement of cities.
