UN Officials Congratulate President Ilham Aliyev on Landmark Agreement with Armenia


Baku: Organizations and individuals operating within the United Nations have sent congratulatory letters to President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, APA reports. These letters commend the recent historic agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which aims to normalize relations and pave the way for lasting peace.



According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), highlighted the broader implications of the agreement. She noted that beyond political benefits, the deal could lead to improved connectivity and regional integration, fostering open and resilient trade routes. This, she believes, can drive economic diversification, sustainable growth, and social development. Grynspan emphasized UNCTAD’s readiness to assist in promoting investment and enhancing productive capacities to ensure that the benefits of peace are shared widely. She also acknowledged the potential of the agreement’s provisions on border delimitation and security cooperation to transform the region.



Miguel ngel Moratinos, High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, also sent his congratulations, calling the Joint Declaration a landmark step towards normalizing relations. He praised the courage and statesmanship involved in shaping a future of peace and cooperation in the region, stressing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy. Moratinos assured continued support from the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations for Azerbaijan and Armenia as they embark on this new chapter.



Vladanka Andreeva, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, expressed her sincere congratulations on behalf of the United Nations Country Team in Azerbaijan. She commended the signing of the Joint Declaration with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan as a historic milestone. Andreeva emphasized the United Nations’ strong support for advancing peace and dialogue in the South Caucasus. She reiterated the commitment to strategic collaboration through the upcoming UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, aligning with Azerbaijan’s national priorities and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.



The United Nations looks forward to continuing its support to Azerbaijan in fostering peace, security, and sustainable development, with a focus on inclusive socio-economic development and climate action.
