Baku: ‘There are positive advances in attitudes toward persons with disabilities and in the way they are presented,” said the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Vladanka Andreeva, at a seminar themed ‘Promoting the Use of Inclusive Language in the Media,’ APA reports.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Andreeva highlighted that together with local partners, the organization she represents is working to create opportunities for every person with disabilities to fully realize their potential. She noted that their efforts are already yielding positive results, stating, ‘Even our own offices were not fully accessible for people with disabilities at first, but we changed that. Now our team includes colleagues with disabilities.’
The UN representative emphasized that the purpose of the seminar organized for the media is to encourage journalists to ensure that stories about persons with disabilities reflect dignity, equality, and individuality. She mentioned that media representatives are participating in the seminar, and they will conduct model analyses explaining what inclusive language means. Andreeva expressed hope that from now on, there will be a different and more positive approach in the way persons with disabilities are presented in the media, which will directly affect societal perceptions and support for them.
