Washington: A bill has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives aimed at lifting the longstanding arms embargo on Azerbaijan, marking a potential milestone in the normalization of relations between the United States and Azerbaijan. Paolo von Schirach, President of the Global Policy Institute and a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Bay Atlantic University, shared his insights on this development with AZERTAC.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Schirach highlighted the procedural journey of the bill, which requires approval from both the House and the Senate before reaching the President for final approval. He noted that while the process will take time, the introduction of the bill is a significant indicator that the situation in the Caucasus is stabilizing.
Schirach acknowledged ongoing negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing that major territorial disputes have been resolved and are unlikely to resurface. He expressed optimism about the U.S. Congress’s move to eliminate outdated legislation that unfairly targets Azerbaijan. Once enacted, this law would signify a crucial step toward fully normalizing diplomatic and strategic relations between the two nations.
