Trkiye PA Asserts Role in Combating Disinformation During Karabakh Conflict

Ankara: Trkiye’s Communications Directorate has announced its active role in countering disinformation related to the Second Karabakh War. Burhanettin Duran, the Head of the Communications Directorate of the Presidency of the Republic of Trkiye, addressed this issue at the Turkic States Forum on Combating Disinformation held in Ankara. He highlighted the efforts made by the Center for Combating Disinformation, which has identified up to 2,500 cases of disinformation to date.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Duran emphasized the pervasive nature of unverified claims on social media. He pointed out that the Second Karabakh War involved not only military struggles but also significant battles on the information front. Disinformation campaigns aimed to undermine Azerbaijan’s victory, but Trkiye’s efforts in debunking false narratives played a crucial role in supporting the victory on the information battlefield.

Duran provided an example of the disinformation encountered during the conflict. A false story circulated with the headline “Azerbaijani soldiers mock an elderly Armenian woman in Karabakh,” suggesting misconduct by Azerbaijani soldiers. However, the complete video revealed that an Azerbaijani soldier was actually assisting the woman in drinking water, countering the misleading narrative.

He also warned about the potential for footage manipulation and the creation of misleading videos through artificial intelligence, highlighting the challenges in the fight against disinformation.
