Baku: As part of her working visit to Serbia, Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, met with Jessica Alupo, Vice President of the Republic of Uganda. The meeting focused on reviewing the current state of relations between the two countries and acknowledging their cooperation within international frameworks.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the discussions highlighted the successful collaboration and joint activities within the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. The officials noted that Azerbaijan had recently completed its chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement, passing the leadership role to Uganda. Sahiba Gafarova emphasized the significance of Azerbaijan’s contributions during its four-year chairmanship, including initiatives by President Ilham Aliyev and the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network.
The meeting also addressed bilateral cooperation, with particular attention to the ‘ASAN Khidmet’ model, which has been effectively implemented in Uganda. Furthermore, both countries are working together in various sectors, and Ugandan students are set to benefit from the ‘Heydar Aliyev International Education Grant’ program in the 2024-2025 academic year.
Interparliamentary cooperation was another focal point, with both sides recognizing the importance of reciprocal visits to strengthen ties. Jessica Alupo expressed Uganda’s appreciation for the existing bilateral relations with Azerbaijan and the desire to expand cooperation in areas such as investment, trade, agriculture, science, and technology.
Jessica Alupo thanked Azerbaijan for its support during Uganda’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement and shared her perspective on potential collaborations within international organizations and the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network. The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
