Speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament Emphasizes Global Climate Change Challenge at COP29.

Baku: “Climate change is the greatest challenge of humanity, transcending national borders and requiring collective efforts,” stated Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan, during a Parliamentary Meeting organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Milli Majlis as part of COP29. Gafarova highlighted the global impact of climate change and the pressing need for international collaboration.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, nearly 90 delegations from national parliaments, inter-parliamentary organizations, and other institutions are participating in the meeting. Gafarova emphasized this as a testament to the collective determination to tackle climate change, which she described as the most urgent issue of our time. She noted that Azerbaijan, like other countries, has experienced the adverse effects of climate change including extreme heat, water shortages, declining water levels in the Caspian Sea, and floods.

Under President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership, Azerbaijan ha
s proactively addressed these challenges through various initiatives. The country has integrated a green agenda into its national development programs, made voluntary commitments, and implemented renewable energy projects, including the creation of green energy zones ahead of COP29. This approach demonstrates Azerbaijan’s commitment to addressing climate change and its impact on the nation and the world.
